What are the types of joists available on the market?

Wood I-joist: These products are available from a stock whose most common heights are 9½", 11⅞", 14" and 16". Some manufacturers produce joists up to 24" in height. Their main advantage is that they can be cut at the site with the exact dimensions required. They can also be used as continuous carry-on to accelerate the installation at the site. The core can be drilled according to the manufacturer's instructions to allow the passage of ducts and conduits, especially in the central section of the ports where the shear stress is low. This type of truss is the least expensive and is supervised by an external inspection firm (e.g. APA).

Lace truss with metal connectors : They are triangulated trusses composed of two parallel soles in 2x3 or 2x4 laid flat and of chords made of wooden diagonals of the same section as the soles. The components of the soles are first mechanically completed on their wide side with metal connectors. The diagonals and soles are then assembled in rigid templates where metal connectors are mechanically pressed on the narrow side of the workpieces. The final product provides a large surface support for the laying of the coatings while allowing the passage of different ducts or sheaths without having to cut the pieces. The lace truss is available in two versions: the one produced in the exact dimensions specific to each project and the one delivered from a stock of adjustable-end joists (usually with a 12” adjustment on each side). They are usually used in simple range and can be supported on a beam or wall by the upper sole that is often doubled at that end.

What is in a floor system apart from the joists?

LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber): It consists of veneers arranged to disperse the natural characteristics of the wood. We obtain panels whose folds are all aligned to allow the yarn of the veneers to be parallel to the main direction. It is usually used as poles, beams and lintels. The manufacturing process converts approximately 75% of the tree into structural elements, which represents a gain of about 30% compared to its transformation into solid wood. Panels with a thickness of usually 1-Âľ "are split to the current widths of 9-½" to 24” in lengths ranging from 8' to 66'. The beams and columns are usually composed of 2 to 4 folds of 1-¾” nailed, screwed and/or bolted together. Some manufacturers produce thicknesses up to 7". The LVL wood is often specified by its module of elasticity (deformation rate) which generally varies from 12 400 MPa (1.8 e) to 13 790 MPa (2.0 e).

PSL (Parallel Strand Lumber) : It is composed of long shavings of at most ¼” thick and of an average length of at least 300 times its thickness, all glued parallel to each other and pressed to form continuous elements. This material is resistant, aesthetic and often left apparent. It is mainly used as poles, master beams and long-range lintels. In addition to the width of 1"-Âľ" specific to LVL, 3-½ ", 5-ÂĽ" and 7 "wide are also available. Available heights range from 9-½ to 18-Âľ. The most common module of elasticity is 13 790 MPa (2.0 e). The columns use a 1.8 e module. This product offers a high mechanical resistance to shear and transverse stresses as well as good bending characteristics. The wood of parallel chips Parallam™ is the only PSL product available on the market to date.

SLS (Laminated Strand Lumber) : It consists of long shavings not more than 1/10” thick and an average length of at least 150 times its thickness, all glued parallel to each other and pressed to form continuous elements. It is an intermediate product between the LVL wood and the PSL. It is cut to make additional structural elements, for example: Shore joists, medium-range beams or lintels. This product is also used as a stud for the walls of large heights. Resistant to bending, shearing and transverse and longitudinal compressions, it offers a superior strength-to-weight ratio than that of steel. The elasticity modules offered range from 9 000 to 10 700 MPa (1, 3e to 1, 55th). It is produced in several widths like 1-ÂĽ ", 1-Âľ" and 3-½” in heights of 9-ÂĽ" to 20". The wood of long-rolled shavings TimberStrand™ is, to date, the only LSL product available on the market.

End joist : An element made of timber or engineered wood that belts the exterior of a floor. It is used as a bracing for joists and floor joists. It also participates in the transfer of vertical loads from the upper floors. As for its thickness, it is 1-½" for timber, 1-⅛" for OSB panels and 1-¼” for composite lumber panels (LVL, LSL or PSL). The nailing of the subfloor panels to the end joist provides a diaphragm effect to the whole.

Galvanized sheet metal bracket : A variety of accessories and stirrups are available to meet the different types of assembly of lumber or engineering elements. They are manufactured in series and cold formed with thin galvanized steel sheet. They are pierced to receive nails or wood screws (StrongDriveMD, Simpson Strong Tie for example). Their ability to transfer ultimate lateral loads must be obtained by testing according to the ASTM D1761 standard. The results of these tests shall be interpreted according to article 10.10.3.1 of the CSA O86 Standard to obtain the weighted resistance of each assembly. It is very important to make sure that you have the right bracket when making a connection. These stirrups are especially suitable for lightweight framing, but can sometimes be used in beam and pole systems made of medium-section wood. They allow the transfer of high loads both on the flank or the top of the beams and at the head and base of the columns. For outdoor continuous exposure and use with wood products treated with corrosive preservatives, products must be selected with a thicker galvanizing layer.
